A WIN for schools and students through Written Portraits

WIN $500 a student, $5000 for your school and a chance to have your story published!

Written Portraits, teenagers writing competition is a collaborative effort by Forming Circles Pty Ltd and Green Olive Press.

Our aim is to showcase young Australian Writing talent and provide a creative platform for expression of inner feelings and emotions associated with being a teenager. We can all benefit in knowing and understanding how it is to live a teenage life.

Eligible entrants, students from the Sutherland Shire and our sponsors edval Timetables client schools will be asked to write a short story of between 800 and 1200 words that is as descriptive as a painting. Their story can include any issue that is important to them; in doing so it will give them a voice during this often emotional and exciting time of their lives. It could be about themselves, a personal situation they have been in, a teacher they admire, a bully they wish to confront, or a place or person that is special to them.

Entries will be judged by a panel of experts. The winning writers in both categories (13 to 15 years and 16 to 18 years) will each receive $500 with his or her school receiving $5000 for its literacy program. Closing date is 30th June 2012.

We want to inspire and motivate students, to explore their skills by encouraging them to enter our competition. We want to give them their voice and honour them for courageously exploring themselves and their literary talents.

The competition is unique in that we will publish an anthology of work from chosen entrants. This book will then be made available throughout the entrants’ schools and will also be for sale at selected retailers through Green Olive Press. Any proceeds made from the sale of books will be used to fund ‘Written Portraits Competition 2013’.

We would like to give a big thank you to our sponsor  edval Timetables for working with us in presenting the Written Portraits 2012 Writing competition.

Video Update – February 2012

Have a big dream for your business?

Forming Circles wants to help you to boost your business. Is there a new project, a range you want to develop or some software that can free up some time? We’re running a three stage promotion that could kick start your business this year.

Stage 1: We asked what you’d do with an unexpected sum of money for your business. By contributing to the post, our readers have a 1 in 5 chance to win a $1000 Gift to Grow Your Small Business. The lucky 5 will be drawn out from our lucky hat by my son Tristan tomorrow morning before he embarks on his own journey to his BIG school for the 1st time…. we can’t wait to share the winner with you, and see what they will do with the funds.

Stage 2: Want $5,000 to make a business dream come true? Forming Circles wants to help you to take your business to the next level. To be eligible to take advantage of this opportunity, upload a video on the Forming Circles Facebook page up to two minutes long using  YouTube or Facebook Video. We want to see you talking about:

  • Your business - What is your core product, how long have you been operating, how did you start, what do you love about your business
  • What this windfall would mean for you
  • Where you see your business in 5 years time.

Entries will be judged on Tuesday 7th February so get creative and tell us what you need!

Stay tuned for Stage 3.

Business Dreams – a Sunday Evening Conversation

I’ve recently been using Facebook as a conversation platform for my circle of small business women to discuss their goals, dreams, hurdles and tips with each other. I’d have to say that tonights discussion blew me away. The discussion kicked off with my post:

“If you received $1000, $5000, $10000 today, what would it mean for you and for your business? Very important that you answer this question … remember we are trying to help you!”

125 posts later and 100 new fans, I am filled with passion. There seemed to be a recurrent trend of needs: 1) IT – computer hardware and software updates 2) Marketing assistance and 3) Mentoring. Never fear, my thinking cap is on (even whilst sleeping) and I am conjuring up ways to make our business circle successful.

Stay tuned to see what happens next and who’s dreams will come true by following us on Facebook

Happy Fish And A Brave Discussion #Community

I had a wonderful dinner at Altitude restaurant with Kathie Melocco, Curator of The Brave Discussion. A great connection of two minds while eating “happy fish” (as described by our waiter).

The Brave Discussion Movement is a community based project led by a company of sisters who come together to raise awareness for issues that need to be discussed, whose stories need to be changed.

The Clooney and The Green

Green Olive Press and Forming Circles

We have formed a strong relationship centred around finding ways to inspire young people to read and write more, so we can help to restore Australia’s 2nd place held in International literacy and numeracy ranking until recently, and which currently slipped 6 places. Your creative ideas and suggestions are welcomed!

Westpac Women’s Markets

Forming Circles attended Westpac Women’s Markets Christmas Luncheon at Aria Restaurant with guest speaker Ann Sherry AO, CEO Carnival Australia.  What a fantastic event at Aria Restaurant. Ann Sherry absolutely rocks! What a positive and inspiring woman.

Network Central’s The Businesswomen’s Luncheon
Forming Circles attended Network Central’s Businesswomen’s Luncheon at beautiful Tearoom QVB. Our guest speaker was award-winning journalist Ray Martin sitting just a couple of meters away from our table. Bought his new book as a Christmas present for my mother-in-law. It was a lovely event to remember.

George Clooney – The Power Of Collaboration

Forming Circles attended the Global Leadership Forum: George Clooney’s presentation on “The Power Of Collaboration”. In his rare public appearance George discussed how we all use our circle of influence and personal power to make a difference to the issues that matter in our professional and personal lives. The added experience for forming circles was the photo opportunity with George Clooney, not only an actor, but also an activist, Co-founder, Not On Our Watch, and Satellite Sentinel Project
